What does peace have to do with environmental protection? Everything. Creating peace through engendering freedom, through becoming peaceful ourselves and innovating peace-production can all contribute to better protecting the natural world.

Q&A with a New Moksha Teacher

Emily Vettese at MYNY's Costa Rica Yoga retreat in Nov. 2011.

Five long-time students from the North York studio officially became Moksha Yoga teachers this October. Congratulations to Sarah Brose, Rich Grossman, Emily Vettese, Jocelyn Wu and Victor Young for completing their 30-day intensive teacher training at Moksha Montreal. For a glimpse at what it’s like becoming a teacher, we sat down with Emily Vettese to talk about her experience.

MYNY+Thill: Why did you apply to become a Moksha teacher?
Emily Vettese: When I started practicing Moksha about five years ago, there was something special drawing me to it. As I went through high school and university, yoga was the only constant in my life that I was passionate about and always in love with. This year felt right to apply. I was able to financially, with my schooling I could reschedule things to make it work and the location seemed suitable.

MY: How did you know that you were ready?
EV: It just felt right. Deep inside I was yearning for something bigger than myself—to do something meaningful.

MY: The training wasn’t in your hometown. How did you like living in another city?
EV: I actually lived with Rich and Victor so I should be careful what I say! But really, everything was great. We lived right near a massive market with fresh produce, Victor drove so transportation was fine and Montreal is very similar to Toronto so there was no culture shock. Except that I can’t speak French…

MY: How did you prepare for the training?
EV: I did all of the required readings beforehand. It helped me prepare for the “yoga discourse” that was used throughout the training. I also practiced as much as I could. I didn’t practice every day before I left but I found having a regular practice was enough. I also cut out coffee before I left because at training we aren’t supposed to have caffeine, alcohol, drugs or meat.

MY: What was your favourite part of the training?
EV: The first time I got to teach! I taught the last part of the series and brought the class to savasana. It was so humbling and felt like such an honour.

MY: What was the most challenging part of the training?
EV: Being away from home. I am more introverted in large groups at first so it took me a while to feel at ease. But as time went on, I grew more comfortable with everyone… then I didn’t want to leave!

MY: Do you have any advice for anyone who is considering it?
EV: Do it! You think you are going for a yoga teacher training but it is so much more than that. You are learning about yourself in so many ways, becoming confident, opening up and gaining 60 new family members.

Watch out for our new teachers leading classes in the coming weeks at both North York and Thornhill studios. If you’re interested in becoming a Moksha teacher, the Level 1 trainings are held a few times a year and destinations have included Montreal, Victoria, India and Brazil.
